A Boy and his Boot or DH changes footwear

Once upon a time, long before I met DH, he began to roll his ankles from time to time. Shortly before Christmas, he rolled his left ankle with unusual alacrity while helping some of the youth in our congregation deliver some holiday treats via "ring and run." He claims that he would have gone to the doctor immediately but that I talked him out of it. I have no memory of this. But, by the weekend his ankle was no better, was at least a bit worse and we have the benefit of one of the other bishops in our meetinghouse being an orthopedic surgeon in his non-bishoply hours, so DH asked the professional opinion of said bishop. Bishop Dr. said, and I paraphrase "Um, anatomically your foot should not do that." So, DH went to visit Bishop Dr. during his office hours and came away with this:

and with the prescription to wait a few weeks and then come back in to schedule surgery for a tendon/ligament graft to strengthen the ankle. DH did as advised and eventually the scheduled surgery date arrived yesterday. Grandpa Bill came to stay overnight so that he would be able to get the kids off to school in the morning and I drove DH to the hospital for his 5:30am call. After hanging out in same day surgery for the entire morning, Bishop Dr. and his cohort anesthesiologist (ironically, the other bishop in our meetinghouse) declared the surgery a success, DH awoke groggy and loopy, had a crash course in crutch use and management and we went home, armed with Lortab and strict instructions on elevation and icing. DH now looks like this:

He will keep this new footwear for the next 10 days or so after which Bishop Dr. will evaluate DH's convalescence and issue something new and exciting for the next phase of his recuperation. Until that time, we are supposed to keep DH from putting ANY weight on his foot. This is going to be tricky, but thankfully, temporary and it as good a reason as any for the kids to get some serious gaming time in with dad (both old school board games as pictured here as well as of the Wii variety).

I'm still impressed how well your kids did at playing Risk. I think mine would have gotten annoyed/bored rather quickly.

Does this mean DH's cast thingy is off now?
